DUI & Criminal Defense Lawyer in Reading, PA
Reading is the Berks County seat. Whether you were stopped downtown or on Route 422, your case will be heard at the courthouse on Court Street.
Getting arrested in Reading
The Reading Police Department patrols the city, while neighboring West Reading, Wyomissing, Muhlenberg and Cumru have their own departments. The Pennsylvania State Police handle a lot of the highway traffic around the city.
Stops are common on Route 422 (the West Shore Bypass), Route 222, Route 12 (the Warren Street Bypass) and Penn Street downtown. The restaurant strip on Penn Avenue in West Reading produces a fair number of weekend DUI arrests, along with drug and theft charges that come out of the city.
What happens next
Most cases begin with a preliminary arraignment or a summons, then a preliminary hearing at a magisterial district court. Cases held for court move to the Berks County Court of Common Pleas at 633 Court Street.
Berks County runs an ARD program for many first-time offenders. Acceptance is up to the District Attorney. Where ARD does not fit, we look for weaknesses in the stop, the search and the testing.
